DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
=======================
Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
before buying it. If you try a Shareware program and continue
using it, you are expected to register. Individual programs
differ on details--some request registration while others require
it; some specify a maximum trial period. With registration, you
get anything from the simple right to continue using the software
to an updated program with printed manual.
Copyright laws apply to both Shareware and commercial software,
and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
exceptions as stated below. Shareware authors are accomplished
programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
and bad ones!) The main difference is in the method of
distribution. The author specifically grants the right to copy
and distribute the software, either to all and sundry or to a
specific group. For example, some authors require written
permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
Shareware.
Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software. You
should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
whether it's commercial or Shareware. The Shareware system makes
fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
And because the overhead is low, prices are low also. Shareware
has the ultimate money-back guarantee--if you don't use the
product, you don't pay for it.
DISCLAIMER-AGREEMENT
--------------------
Users of GRAPHCAT must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
"GRAPHCAT IS SUPPLIED AS IS. THE AUTHOR DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES,
EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, THE
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY AND OF FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE. THE
AUTHOR ASSUMES NO LIABILITY FOR DAMAGES, DIRECT OR CONSEQUENTIAL,
WHICH MAY RESULT FROM THE USE OF GRAPHCAT."
Graphcat is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge to
the user for evaluation. Feel free to share it with your friends,
but please do not give it away altered or as part of another
system. The essence of "user-supported" software is to provide
personal computer users with quality software without high
prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to continue
to develop new products. If you find this program useful and find
that you are using Graphcat after a trial period of 45 days, you
must make a registration payment of $10. to Science Translations.
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1993 Jerry Stern
G R A P H C A T ( Windows ) V. 1.0 4
The $10. registration fee will license one copy for use on any
one computer at any one time. You must treat this software just
like a book. An example is that this software may be used by any
number of people and may be freely moved from one computer
location to another, so long as there is no possibility of it
being used at one location while it's being used at another, just
as a book cannot be read by two different persons at the same
time.
Commercial users of Graphcat must register and pay for their
copies of Graphcat within 30 days of first use or their license
is withdrawn. Site-License arrangements may be made by contacting
Science Translations.
Anyone distributing Graphcat for any kind of remuneration must
first contact Science Translations at the address below for
authorization. This authorization will be automatically granted
to distributors recognized by the ASP as adhering to its
guidelines for shareware distributors, and such distributors may
begin offering Graphcat immediately. (However, Science
Translations must still be advised so that the distributor can be
kept up-to-date with the latest version of Graphcat.)
You are encouraged to pass a copy of Graphcat along to your
friends for evaluation. Please encourage them to register their
copy if they find that they can use it. All registered users will
receive a copy of the latest version of the Graphcat system,
including the current version on disk, and a bonus disk of
additional clip art.
Registrations, Site Licenses, and Permission to distribute are
available from: Jerry Stern, Science Translations, P. O. Box

INSTALLATION
============
If you are reading these files on screen, you may print them with
the PRINTMAN.BAT batch file. (Don't print them from WordPerfect--
they are formatted with page breaks for printing from DOS.) You
do not need to exit Windows--from the Windows Program Manager,
choose File, and then Run. Type each command as it appears below,
and press (Enter). An easier way to run the PRINTMAN and SETUP
batch files is to go to DOS by double-clicking on the MS-DOS
prompt icon, usually installed in the Accessories group. (Type
EXIT when ready to return to Windows.)
From the DOS prompt, log to the directory holding the Graphcat
distribution files. Start the PRINTMAN file by typing it like
this:
printman lpt1 (where lpt1 is the name of your printer
--change it as needed for your system.)
COPYING THE FILES
-----------------
Before installing the Graphcat files, make a backup copy of the
distribution disk, and store the original disk in a safe place,
preferably in a different location than the backup copy of the
disk. Install the files from the backup disk, not the original.
There are three files in Graphcat that must be installed on your
hard drive to be used. These files are GRAPHCAT.WCM,
GRAPHCAT.DLL, and INDEX.WCM, and must be copied to your macro
directory. The SETUP batch file will copy those files for you,
and will also create a directory for the optional clip art
samples and instruction files. The SETUP batch file will copy the
samples and DOC files to any location you wish. Advanced users
may choose to copy these three files manually; no technical
support will be provided for this procedure.
You must tell the SETUP batch file what directory is being used
to hold your WordPerfect for Windows macros. If you don't know
where WP/Win keeps your macros, look in the File menu, choose
Preferences, choose Location of Files, write down the entry under
Macros/Keyboards/Button Bars, and click on Cancel to exit the
Preferences box.
To install the Graphcat files, run the batch file SETUP.BAT from
the DOS prompt while logged to the Graphcat distribution disk or
directory. Type:
setup
A screen of information will appear.
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1993 Jerry Stern
G R A P H C A T ( Windows ) V. 1.0 9
The setup batch file does two things: 1) It will create a
directory for your sample clip art and DOC files. 2) It will copy
the macros and library file to the directory you identify as the
WP/WIN macro directory. Once SETUP finishes copying files, you
are ready to start using Graphcat.
SAVING HARD DRIVE SPACE
-----------------------
The clip art images and DOC files need not remain on your hard
disk once you have become comfortable with running the software.
The macros and library file must remain in the WP/Win macro
directory.
INTRODUCTION & QUICK START
==========================
GRAPHCAT requires WordPerfect 5.2 for Windows, any release date.
It is a shareware package of WordPerfect macros that read any
disk or directory, and create a pictorial listing of all the
graphics found. After running the SETUP batch file or copying
GRAPHCAT.WCM, GRAPHCAT.DLL, and INDEX.WCM to the WP macro
directory, run the macro by pressing Macro (Alt-F10), and
entering GRAPHCAT. Answer the prompts for the drive and
directory, file mask, catalog title, number of columns, and
graphic height. The default values for columns and height allow
28 graphics per page.
FILEINDX requires a database program. These database files are
used with INDEX to create a database of graphics files (or any
other files). Load these files into a directory readable by the
database program, and run the program normally. Be sure to delete
or overwrite the one sample record already in the file.
The files with .WPG extensions are clip art. The patterns and
styles vary greatly, and they are provided as handy files for
testing GRAPHCAT. They are all Wood Clips samples, of a variety
of subjects. When you register, your bonus disk will contain
additional Wood Clips, and additional collections are available
by subject.
Only the first prompt must be answered in Graphcat for Windows.
For the easiest use of Graphcat, type the file path at the first
prompt, and press [Enter]. Graphcat will handle everything else.
GRAPHCAT and the INDEX macros should work properly with ANY WP
5.2 language module. However, I have not been able to test every
possible international combination of software and hardware.

Please write if you find that GRAPHCAT fails in any way on your
system..
USERS OF GRAPHCAT 2.0 OR 2.1 FOR DOS
------------------------------------
Use GRAPHCAT 1.0 as you did the DOS versions, but notice the
important change on the second prompt: The file extension
question has been replaced by a file mask. Where you would type
"WPG" on the DOS version, the Windows version requires "*.WPG"
instead. Standard DOS wild cards may be used to choose groups of
files by name.
WordPerfect for Windows handles graphics differently than the DOS
version--the DOS version does a better job on files that include
rotated bitmap images, and the Windows version adds BMP files
(usually Windows wallpaper) to the supported formats list.
Also different from the DOS version: There is now a default
choice for the catalog title. If you leave the title prompt
blank, Graphcat will provide a title reading, "Clip Art in " and
the location and file mask that were used to find the files in
the catalog.
The Windows version also does not require separate versions of
the INDEX macro for DOS 5 and 4DOS, as the DOS version does. Use
INDEX.WCM for all disk operating systems and system add-ons.
WHAT IS GRAPHCAT?
=================
I've been collecting clip art for different projects. A small
book, some newsletters, signs, and still more pictorial projects.
I've drawn some, scanned some paper clip art, and bought some
disks of pictures. I was beginning to lose track of which disk
had what pictures. I needed an index, a printout of every graphic
I had, so I could keep them handy for reference.
The WPG files shipped with WordPerfect have their own printed
picture indexes of art in the manual, but disks of PCX or GEM
files from computer show rack vendors are escapees from that
elusive paperless office we all keep hearing about. And clip art
disks are uneven; some of them are full disks of excellent art on
related topics, but others are totally unrelated pictures. Worse,
because there are several flavors of each of the graphics file
formats, some files will not be recognized by WordPerfect, and
will read as bad. Overall, clip art disks are worthwhile, but a
printed index would help sort the good files from the fuzzy junk.
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1993 Jerry Stern
G R A P H C A T ( Windows ) V. 1.0 11
And the commercial clip art isn't much better. Oh, the graphics
are better, but the printed indexes are printed too small, or on
newsprint, or are all mixed in with the pictures of every other
graphic collection sold by that company.
Meanwhile, my co-workers on a newsletter project wanted to see
all their clip art. I kept their graphics on a separate disk, but
they wanted paper copies to refer to, so they could tell me, "Use
that butterfly picture from page two." I began to create a sample
document, with every graphic shown, and the file names, and the
disk titles, and immediately found that there was too much work
involved. I had two options: I could delegate the job, or write a
macro to do the job. Since I couldn't find anyone who would spend
three hours to create the index for each disk, I wrote GRAPHCAT.
It's a lot faster than an assistant; it only takes from a few
seconds to a few minutes to complete the job, depending on the
speed of the computer and the size of the graphics files.
GRAPHCAT makes this task easy, so easy that nearly no effort is
needed to create a new catalog for each directory or floppy of
pictures. If the macro is told the drive and path of the files,
the computer should do the rest.
With just that information, the WordPerfect macro reads the
appropriate directory, identifies the graphics files, sets their
sizes, locations, and options in a catalog, and leaves that
catalog ready to print. Once the catalog is built, you may
preview it, print it, and save it if you want. However, I don't
recommend saving these files because they will be slightly larger
than the cumulative size of all the graphics in the directory.
INTERIM RELEASES OF WP
----------------------
Writing software in a macro language is like controlling a
rowboat by towing it from a distance of five parsecs. GRAPHCAT
should work in all future releases of WP/Win 5.2 BUT, sometimes
new "features" disable old features. When this happens, try
turning "off" the new features if GRAPHCAT doesn't seem to like
the new release. Better yet, call or write for support--there
will be either a fix or a new release, as needed, to fix any
problems caused by new features.
PROMPTS
=======
Start GRAPHCAT by pressing Macro (Alt-F10), typing GRAPHCAT, and
pressing Enter. You must have at least two document screens
available, but not to worry: GRAPHCAT checks for workspace and
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1993 Jerry Stern
G R A P H C A T ( Windows ) V. 1.0 12
will not let you do anything dangerous. A full-screen dialog box
will appear, asking five questions. Only the first must be
answered; the others are optional, and allow you to customize
your catalogs.
At the first prompt, enter the drive name and path for the
subdirectory to be searched. You may omit the ending backslash if
you like. GRAPHCAT is smart enough to accept the path name either
way. Pressing Cancel (Esc) or clicking the Cancel button at any
time will end the macro.
The second prompt asks for the file mask. Any type of graphics
file readable by WordPerfect may be entered here. What's a file
mask? The simplest file mask is the famous "*.*" which means the
files with any name and any extension. The asterisk substitutes
for any group of characters, and a question mark substitutes for
any single character. The period is required.
For example, to inventory all the IMG and WPG clip art in a
directory, use a file mask of "*.??G" or to find all the files
starting with "BIG-" use "BIG-*.*" as the answer at the second
prompt. If you leave this prompt blank, Graphcat will look at
"*.*" or all the files in the directory.
It's very easy to just accept the default `all files' choice
at the file mask prompt, and try using *.* for everything.
Don't do it! The wild card extension is intended for
cataloging mixed disks of graphics files. If you use the *.*
choice for directories containing program files, GRAPHCAT
will run far more slowly, because it must load and identify
as bad every program file in the directory. For best and
fastest results, use the real file mask of the graphics you
are looking for, unless you really do intend *.* to mean ALL
the files in the directory.
The third prompt asks for a title, and the macro will place that
title in a header on each page of the catalog. I recommend
entering the name of the graphics collection or the name of the
archived backup for that collection, such as "Business Graphics--
BUSINESS.ZIP" in this area. You may leave this prompt blank if
you wish, and Graphcat will create a title for you, reading "Clip
Art in " and the file mask from the second prompt.
The next two prompts request the number of columns and the height
to make each graphic. WordPerfect will calculate the width to
keep the graphics true to scale, room permitting. If less than
about twice the height of a graphic is available for the width,
some graphics in horizontal format will be compressed to fit the
column. For four columns, a height of about one inch or 2.5 cm
allows ample room, and 28 images fit on one page. Some of the
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1993 Jerry Stern
G R A P H C A T ( Windows ) V. 1.0 13
best combinations of columns and image heights are displayed near
the right side of the dialog box.
INTERNATIONAL USERS
-------------------
GRAPHCAT needs to know how tall you would like your graphics
printed in your catalog. That measurement is entered in
inches if the language WordPerfect detects is US English.
For all other languages, including other varieties of
English, centimeters are used automatically. If you would
like to use a different measurement, you must add a
measurement identification letter after the number, using
the standard WordPerfect abbreviations. For example, i or "
for inches, c for centimeters, or p for points.
Once the last entry has been made, click on OK, and GRAPHCAT will
begin loading the graphics into the document. As each graphic is
loaded, the macro announces the new graphic on the bottom line of
the document screen.
If GRAPHCAT and WordPerfect decide that a graphic in your sample
directory is not a proper graphics file, GRAPHCAT will add that
file name to a list of files that could not be loaded, and that
list will be printed at the end of the catalog. You may delete
that message after the catalog is prepared, or you may try to
convert the bad graphic or edit it with a graphics program,
resave it, and run GRAPHCAT again. Because not every version of
every graphic format is supported by WordPerfect, I prefer to
leave the file list in the catalog to identify a file that may be
usable in other software, but not in WordPerfect. (Or the disk
may contain non-graphic files, such as a README.1ST, and these
files will be listed automatically at the end of the catalog.)
When the catalog is finished, a dialog box will appear to let you
know. From this point on, the catalog is just a complex document,
and you may edit it or print it as you would any other large
document.
GRAPHCAT may be stopped in mid-inventory by pressing Cancel (Esc)
just once; there may be a time lag of a few seconds before the
macro stops. If you use Cancel to stop GRAPHCAT, the macro will
warn you that the catalog is incomplete.
IN GENERAL
----------
Don't attempt to edit these macros; many of the functions
performed by the macros are neither obvious or documented, and
All Rights Reserved (C) Copyright 1993 Jerry Stern

changes will generally lead to system lockups. If you would like
a custom modification of Graphcat, contact the author for a price
quote.
GRAPHCAT and the INDEX macro have error trapping routines built
in to prevent garbage entries, and to turn off Reveal Codes if
needed, and will not try to run if you start them without
sufficient work space. If you wish to import the catalog into a
document, run the macro first, and then merge the other text or
formatting into the catalog.
Since starting to catalog my clip art collection, I've found
pictures I didn't know I had, and I've used some of those in new
projects. Now that I don't have to hire extra help to create the
listings, I can find the picture I want in no time, and, better
yet, I can take the picture notebook with me to a co-worker, a
client, or a conference, and I don't need to borrow someone
else's computer and be at the mercy of someone else's operating
system.
EDITING AND PRINTING TIPS
=========================
PRESENTATIONS CLIP ART
----------------------
The clip art images that ship with WP Presentations are in SHW
files, which are groups of clip art images organized into
slideshows. WordPerfect for Windows cannot handle slideshows, and
therefore, Graphcat cannot handle them either. To convert the SHW
files into WPG files, you must retrieve the file to be converted.
(Each file begins with "FIG-" and has the SHW extension.) Choose
Export from the File menu, and make sure the "Save all slides"
box is checked. Provide a file name that is no longer than 6
characters, and add "01" to the end. Click on the WPG file type,
and finally, click on Export. Presentations will number and save
all the files in the collection. Graphcat may be run normally on
the new files, and WP/Win can use the new files in documents.
(Note: these directions were written based on the DOS version of
WP Presentations, but the new Windows version should maintain
very similar steps for exporting images.)
COLOR CLIP ART
--------------
WordPerfect for Windows 5.2 does not support color while using a
WordPerfect printer driver, unless the printer uses color
Postscript. For any other color printer, a color catalog of clip
art is available, but you must use a Windows printer driver to

print in color on non-Postscript color printers. Third-party add-
on drivers for color printing with WP drivers were not available
as of this writing, but will become available for WP 5.2/Win as
they are already for WP 5.1/DOS.
HORIZONTALLY SQUASHED IMAGES
----------------------------
If your images appear to be squashed horizontally when you print
or preview, you need to use either fewer columns or a smaller
image height. To change the height of the images, clear the
document and restart GRAPHCAT. You can change the columns without
rerunning GRAPHCAT, but if you are not comfortable with using the
Reveal Codes feature, it may be easier to simply run Graphcat
again with the new columns setting than to edit the completed
document. First, press Ctrl-Home to reach the extreme top of the
document, before any codes. Turn on Reveal Codes (Alt-F3), and
look for a code that looks like this:
[Col Def: Newspaper...
Place the cursor immediately after that code, and press Layout,
Columns, Define from the menu. Change the number of columns and
click on OK. You may now delete the first of the two column
definition codes, turn off Reveal Codes (Alt-F3), and check your
document by printing or previewing again. The images should no
longer be squashed, but with extremely wide images, you may need
to try still fewer columns, or perhaps none at all.
WRAPPED FILE NAMES
------------------
When using more than four columns, long graphics names may wrap
to the next line, reducing the number of graphics that fit on a
page. If the names wrap, reset the base font to a narrow,
condensed, or thin typeface, using Layout, Document, Initial
Font, choosing a smaller font, and clicking OK when done.
BORDERS
-------
The default border for all GRAPHCAT catalogs is the dashed line.
If you prefer some other border, or none at all, follow these
steps:
Run GRAPHCAT normally, and when the macro finishes running, press
Reveal Codes (Alt-F3). Move the cursor right until the [Fig Opt]
code is highlighted in the codes (bottom) portion of the screen,
and then press (Del). (If you like a solid single line border,

skip the next step.) Now, choose Graphics, Figure, Options,
choose the border style that you would like from the pull-down
lists in the top left of the dialog box, including None, Single,
Double, Dashed, Dotted, Thick, or Extra Thick. You will usually
choose the same style for all four sides of the box, but if you
use a single-style line on any two adjacent sides, and a thick or
extra thick choice on the other two sides, WP will create a drop
shadow for you around each graphic. Click OK when done to return
to your catalog before viewing or printing.
LANDSCAPE PRINTING
------------------
If GRAPHCAT detects any codes in your document, even a page
definition, it will open a new document before creating your
catalog, and the document you started from will be left
unchanged. So if you need a graphics catalog on a page size that
is not your default paper size, such as a landscape version of A4
or 8 1/2" x 11", then follow these steps:
First, run GRAPHCAT normally. Choose one column so that GRAPHCAT
will not insert a column definition code. Next, press Ctrl-Home
to go to the top of the document. If you have turned off the Auto
Code Placement option in Preferences, you must also use the left
arrow key to position the insertion point before ALL of the
formatting codes. Select your paper size from the list available
after choosing Layout, Page, Paper Size. Click on Select when
done.
Next, add column codes, by choosing Layout, Columns, Define,
entering the number of columns, and clicking OK. You may also
wish to reduce the space between columns at the Distance Between
Columns menu choice. Choose Layout, Columns, Columns On to turn
on columns, and then press Ctrl-End to go to the bottom of
document. WordPerfect will reformat your document as it travels.
Your document is now ready to edit, view, or print normally.

INDEX and FILEINDX
==================
The INDEX macro reads a directory of files, and converts that
directory listing into a file that a database program can import
and add to a database. FILEINDX is a set of database files for
PC-File to use in importing the files created by INDEX. The files
FILEINDX.HDB, FILEINDX.DBF, and NAME.NDX compose a sample
graphics database for PC-File. These files should be together on
your hard disk; the ideal spot is a directory called GRAPHCAT.
See Installation on page 8 if you need help preparing the
directory.
The file produced by INDEX is a "comma-delimited mail-merge"
file. Most database programs can import these with no problems.
Although I created the FILEINDX format for keeping track of
graphics and clip art, the format and the INDEX macros can be
used just as easily to form a master catalog of every file on a
hard disk, or any category of files you choose. In addition to
the information from the directory and whatever label you enter
while running INDEX, the FILEINDX data screen allows room for
comments, because it isn't always possible to remember that
RX12-76.CGM is a picture of a troll at a bridge.
To use INDEX, run the macro in the usual way, by pressing Macro
(Alt-F10), typing the name of the macro, and pressing ENTER.
Answer the prompts that appear on screen in the same way as for
the first three prompts in GRAPHCAT.
INDEX will create and retrieve a directory listing, and then
search the listing, inserting commas between columns, resulting
in the comma-delimited list. That list must be saved as a DOS
text file for the database program: Save the file by choosing
File, Save As, typing a file name, and selecting ASCII Text/(DOS)
from the pull-down Format list at the bottom of the dialog box.
IMPORTANT: When you first set up a database of clip art or
other files in a database, you will read and process many
directories. I have allowed for that process in INDEX. If
you start INDEX from a document that is not empty, INDEX
will move to the very bottom of the document, and create the
listing there. For the next disk, simply run the macro
again, and the second list will be added at the bottom of
the existing list. Once you have run each directory through
INDEX, save the list as a DOS text file, exit WP, and import
the data from within the database program.

IMPORTING INTO PC-FILE
----------------------
Here are the steps for the import from within PC-File V. 5.01:
Run the program, and enter the disk and directory where the
FILEINDX files are located. Place the cursor on the FILEINDX name
and press F10. From the main menu, choose Utilities, then Import,
then Mail Merge. Enter the drive, and then the directory name of
the location of the DOS text file. PC-File will display the file
names for that directory. Place the cursor on the list filename,
and press F10. Choose to Overwrite the data already in the
database ONLY IF THIS WILL BE THE FIRST BATCH OF FILENAMES ADDED.
OTHERWISE, CHOOSE APPEND DATA. For each entry you may choose to
add the information, or skip to the next record, or to quit, or
to press X and let PC-File continue through the list, adding all
the data to the file. Choose Yes several times to add the first
few records manually until you are sure the file is being
imported correctly, and then choose X to finish the import.
In PC-File V. 6.5, load the database template by choosing File,
Open, type the drive:\path where the FILEINDX files are stored,
and press Enter twice. To import, choose Utilities, Import, Mail
Merge, and enter the file name of the DOS text file. Choose
Overwrite ONLY IF THIS WILL BE THE FIRST BATCH OF FILENAMES
ADDED. OTHERWISE, CHOOSE APPEND. Choose All records, click on
All, and click on OK at the next two prompts.

TROUBLE-SHOOTER'S GUIDE--GRAPHCAT
=================================
1) GRAPHCAT loads properly, and the big box appears on screen,
but once I click on OK, an error message appears telling me that
the macro could not find the DLL file.
You must copy the file GRAPHCAT.DLL to the WP macro directory. No
other location will do. See the installation instructions on page
8 for help.
2) GRAPHCAT runs perfectly, but I cannot print the result file.
The error messages say I don't have enough disk space.
This can happen if you are trying to catalog a large file of clip
art, and you have very little hard disk space available for
WordPerfect's temporary files. To fix it, from the Windows
Program Manager, highlight the WP icon, and choose File,
Properties. If you have another hard drive partition available
with more space, such as D: or E:, change the Working Directory
prompt to that drive, click on OK, and restart WordPerfect. If
there is no other partition, you will need to move or delete
unneeded files from your hard disk to free up some work space.
3) My catalogs print very slowly, or only half the page prints.
A page full of graphics will print slowly, and some laser
printers may not have enough internal memory to print a page of
that complexity. On a laser printer, if the entire page does not
print, try printing the page at a lower setting for graphics
quality, or use fewer columns.
4) Sometimes when I use the *.* file mask, GRAPHCAT loads a file
as a graphic that isn't one. The document loads and prints
normally, but the box is either empty or contains a random
pattern. Or, and much worse, WordPerfect progresses partially
through the catalog, asks for a password, and then crashes with a
General Protection Fault.
Both conditions are caused by trying to use the *.* file mask
option inappropriately. The * wild card choice was intended for
reading disks containing mixed graphics in different formats,
such as WPG and GEM and CGM graphics mixed together, NOT for
attempting to load every program file on your hard drive in the
attempt to see if any of them are graphics. GRAPHCAT will
correctly identify nearly every file as a graphic or not a
graphic, but there are exceptions.
The General Protection Fault does not occur often, unless an odd
combination of factors is present, such as a bad file combined

with either the SHARE command in use, or a Hyphenation ON code in
the Document Initial Codes area of Preferences. Solution: Don't
run SHARE unless you are running software or hardware that
specifically demands it, such as some network packages. Or remove
that Hyphenation code from Document Initial Codes.
To avoid these problems altogether, when cataloging a directory
of mixed graphics and program files, use the appropriate file
mask, such as *.PCX or *.WPG on the second line of GRAPHCAT's
menu, and save the wild card use for disks holding mostly
graphics.
